Water rescue crews searched Wednesday for a driver after one truck hit another in east Oak Cliff, shutting down several lanes of Interstate 45, but authorities learned later that missing driver had not been in the truck.
The crash happened about noon on I-45 near Overton Road. Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said a dump truck struck a tractor-trailer that was stopped on the highway.
The dump truck’s driver was uninjured, but the tractor-trailer’s driver could not be located immediately.
Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said rescue boats were sent into the Trinity River but were pulled out after they didn’t find anyone.
“We weren’t sure anyone was in the truck when it was hit,” Evans said. “We needed to go in [the water] just to be 100 percent sure.”
Dallas police said they were eventually able to contact the tractor-trailer’s driver, who was safe.
Officials closed the southbound lanes of I-45 because of spilled fuel. The lanes reopened around 3 p.m.
The Plano Fire Department’s hazmat team and Texas Department of Transportation were cleaning up fuel on the overpass, Evans said.
